There was a time in your life when you couldn’t wait to get to work. You loved what you did, and you wanted to do more of it. Wouldn't it be nice if you could get back to that feeling? Wouldn’t it be nice if there were no such thing as burnout in healthcare?

You know the story all too well. You’re finally piecing together a difficult diagnosis, and you get a totally unnecessary phone call. You take a moment to breathe and put your feet up, only to remember you still have 12 more notes to write. You spend all day worrying about the young mother you sent to the ICU, finally realizing you haven’t had a glass of water all day.

Think about the following questions:

  • When was the last time you had an uninterrupted lunch of even 15 minutes?
  • When was the last time you felt like you got enough sleep?
  • When did you last wake up in the morning and feel excited about work?
  • When did you last feel that you were able to devote enough time to your hobbies?
  • When did you last feel truly informed about current events?
  • Do you wish you could be less irritable at work?

Unfortunately, you probably don’t find the answers to these questions to be what you would like. That’s because selfless people like you can experience burnout. Symptoms include exhaustion, a loss of empathy, and a diminished sense of accomplishment. If left unaddressed, you can even develop a sense of nihilism. To compensate, when not working, you may overindulge in behaviors that can be detrimental, like excess exercise or excess alcohol intake.

But if 50% of healthcare workers like you are burned out, that means 50% are not. These latter providers are not just free of the above symptoms, but they might even be thriving. So ask yourself this question:

What exactly are they doing?
